Sidney Paul & Co was commissioned by Yorkshire businessman Jonathan Turner to create a bespoke fabric for The Bowcliffe Hall Drivers’ Club.
Owned by entrepreneur and businessman Jonathan Turner, Bowcliffe Hall is home to the headquarters of The Bayford Group. Joanne and Sidney from Sidney Paul and Co. first met Jonathan at the Goodwood Revival, when Sidney’s illustrations of vintage cars caught his eye. Several years later, their chance encounter would lead to an exciting collaboration with Jonathan on his project to restore and refurbish Bowcliffe Hall in Yorkshire.

Jonathan spearheaded the restoration of the 200-year-old Bowcliffe Hall as a tribute to Robert Blackburn, Bowcliffe’s owner from 1917 to 1955. Blackburn was the first Yorkshireman to have designed and built a powered aeroplane, and he played a significant role in Britain’s early aviation history. Bowcliffe Hall became a meeting place for aircraft pioneers, the RAF, national politicians and the media of the day, and the multi-million-pound restoration has since made Bowcliffe Hall one of the most beautiful and inspiring events and conference facilities in Yorkshire.

The Bowcliffe Drivers’ Club is a private members’ club inspired by the 1920s and the golden age of motoring. Jonathan’s passion for racing pre-war and 1950s cars gave him a clear vision of the interior he wanted to create for the rooms of the club. He filled this events venue with original motoring art and artefacts, and then, taking inspiration from the cars he owns, he commissioned a series of designers to create bespoke furniture, lighting and fabric to complete the look.
Bespoke light fittings incorporated his favourite car manufacturers’ logos in an elegant up-cycled style, and Sidney Paul & Co. was asked to create a unique fabric for the window decoration. Vintage illustrations of scenes of Bowcliffe Hall and Jonathan’s collection of 1920s cars were created by the Sidney Paul & Co. design team; elegantly dressed ladies set the tone of the fashionable 1920s, taking you back to Robert Blackburn’s Bowcliffe.
